| NFL Handicapping Review - Week 2
We bounced back in Week 2 of the NFL with excellent results: 10 Picks - 7 Wins - 3 Losses. We heard a number of pundits bemoaning the fact that were a large number of supposed "upsets" in Week 2. Feel free to infer that they got most of their picks wrong. We saw only one upset, and that was the Bears road win at the Packers (a game that we incidentally got wrong, but who didn't?). It was no surprise to see the Jaguars win at home over the Broncos, nor to see the Chiefs fall to the Panthers. The Chiefs and the Broncos made each other look good in the first week, but the sad truth remains that the Broncos have very little true offense with Plummer as their QB while the Chiefs have the same awful defense as last season.
We made our money following teams that we identified as strong or weak respectively in Week 1: the Jets (strong); the Rams (weak) who we challenged when they went on the road; the Bengals (weak enough not to cover at home); the Lions (strong). The way to do this is to devise your own set of power rankings, and to apply them rigorously to the upcoming schedule.
The Monday Night game came as no surprise to us either as the Eagles looked good in dispatching the highly-touted Vikings. Both of these teams will go to the playoffs, but only one (the Eagles) is likely to get to the title game. It remains to be seen how the Eagles will handle a good running team (Seattle comes to mind), but they were able to out-think the Vikings and Culpepper tonight.
Teams to watch out for in future weeks include the Redskins (overrated); the Jaguars (still underrated); the Colts (very impressive this week); the Buccaneers (very weak); the Saints (overrated - their win at home to the 49ers was a poor effort); and the 49ers (very weak).
Finally, injuries dominate the news about the NFL this week, but don't let one injury on a team cloud your betting decisions! When Davis went down for the Panthers they simply replaced him with Foster, who might turn out to be better than Davis. The Panthers certainly looked better on Sunday and won handily behind him. Substitutes at this level have a ton of ability, so don't be swayed by missing stars.
