Week 1 NFL Picks Review

NFL Handicapping Review - Week 1

Unlike other sports handicapping services we do not shy away from discussing our bad weeks - every handicapper and sports bettor has them, lots of them in fact, and the key is what you learn in the process. Week 1 of the NFL regular season saw us go a woeful 2 - 5, and we use the word woeful because of those 5 losses only 1 can legitimately be ruled unlucky, or even a coinflip. That one loss was the Bills against the Jaguars - a heartbreaking loss for those of us who bet the Bills to cover. But the other losses, particularly the Ravens at the Browns, were way off the mark, and warrant analysis.

We would take the Bills every time in that exact same situation as they faced on Sunday, and 90% of the time we would win out. Faced with 3 improbable 4th down scenarios (all of them for big yards, with hardly any time left in the game), the Jaguars converted all 3. The Bills still look like a team with a poor offense and a great defense. Expect points totals to decline steadily in their games, and look for them to be medicore once more.

The biggest shock of the week, from our perspective, was the Browns win over the Ravens. The Browns looked a lot better than we thought, while the opposite held true for the Ravens. Their inability to move the ball through the air was worrying, although we aren't ready to give up on them just yet. The Browns have to be upgraded.

Certain teams performed exactly as predicted - the Bears, Cowboys, and Giants all look to be outclassed this season as things stand. The Eagles, Seahawks, and Vikings started off very impressively. On Monday night the Packers showed they were still a force, while the Panthers could struggle, especially with the crucial injury to Smith.

Sleeper teams this season are going to be: the Jets, who we did pick on Sunday as one of our winners, the Broncos, who could be too strong for their division, and possibly the Redskins, although time will tell with them.
