| NFL Handicapping Review - Week 4 (Preseason)
We ended the NFL preseason with a record of 10 wins - 4 losses - 1 push. Our Premium Members reaped substantial rewards (+4.000 units using a flat-betting system), and if they bet more on our $12 TOP PICKS, which are out top-rated football plays, they would have earned even more (these plays went 3-0 in the preseason). Regardless, cashing in at 71% is nothing to sneeze at!
Now, what does the preseason mean to NFL handicappers looking forward to the regular season? Unlike last season there were (thankfully) no crippling injuries to franchise players in the 2004 preseason. Last year the Jets and Falcons were effectively stifled before the first snap. Based purely on results there are certain teams that can look forward to an upswing in fortunes, but can one rely on preseason results? Last season three teams had perfect 4-0 preseasons: the Patriots, the Panthers, and the Cardinals. So, the two best teams in the NFL and arguably the worst team in the NFL. This year only the Panthers went 4-0, and we wouldn't read too much into that. But a number of teams did impress, while others were disappointing. Let's look at them in detail:
The Panthers are going to win 9 or 10 games this season, and will be better than some analysts expect. They have a very solid team and a brilliant coach - their main problem is that they play in the toughest division in the NFL, and these teams might beat up on one another. The Panthers should be decent ATS betting value, though.
The Jets had a good preseason, and in the weak AFC East they should be able to challenge for a postseason berth. We say "weak" because neither Buffalo nor Miami are anywhere near the Jets or the Patriots, and we expect the Patriots to fall off slightly from last season. The Pats had a poor preseason, but we wouldn't read too much into it. The Jets can compete with them, as long as Pennington stays healthy.
The Jaguars and the Titans both looked sharp in preseason. The former will improve a great deal this year, while the latter can have yet another strong year. Both teams could win 9+ games this year.
The Giants had a miserable preseason and can look forward to a season-long pounding. They have no O line and a porous defense. The Cardinals also looked awful and have a lot of work to do if they hope to win 5 games.
The jury remains out on teams like the Browns, Cowboys, and Bears, who all had fairly good preseason results, but who we expect to see struggle when the real games start. But, maybe we'll have to eat our words - it wouldn't be the first time, nor will it be the last!
Sleeper picks for the postseason remain unchanged: the Ravens and the Seahawks have the most upside this year.
