| NBA PLAYOFFS BETTING PREVIEW
The NBA playoffs get underway on April 23, a week from today, and now is the ideal time to bet on who will win the championship. We break down the chances of the genuine contenders, ignoring those teams that will simply make up he numbers.
MIAMI HEAT: The Heat are the current favorites to win it all, although the difference in the odds with those of the Spurs is minimal. The Heat are currently 13/5 to win it all or +260, while the Spurs are 11/4 or +275. The Heat have a good chance to make it to the Finals, as they have far less competition out East than say the Spurs. Out East there are only two teams with a legitimate chance to win it all - the Heat and the Pistons. The rest cannot possibly win it all. The Heat are a better team than the Pistons, with more depth at key positions, and should be able to beat the Pistons in a 7-game series if it comes to that. If the Heat should have to face the Pacers all bets would be off. The Pacers give the Heat fits, and could actually beat them in a series, especially if they get Jermaine O'Neal back. The bottom line is that the Heat are the wrong price, if only because we aren't convinced that they can beat the best from the West.
PHOENIX SUNS: Before this season started we picked the Suns as the best longshot team, and they have surpassed all expectations by being the best team in the league. Their 60-19 record is unmatched, and they are the best road team by far. They are also a little underrated in our opinion and at 7/2 or +350 they represent excellent betting value in the playoffs. The Spurs were the logical choice to win it all, but they have been brittle at times this year, and rely too heavily on Tim Duncan, who is still a little wobbly coming off injury. The Suns rely totally on Nash, that much is true, but he has been durable, and this is a team that is very explosive. They can beat any other team in the league on any given night, and have to be respected.
DALLAS MAVERICKS: This is the best longshot pick to win it all this season. They are currently 8/1 or +800 and this is very good betting value. The Mavericks have improved defensively, have a superstar scorer, and surprising depth on the bench. This is a team that no-one in the West will want to play and they could be tough to dislodge.
Other teams that could cause playoff upsets are the NUGGETS who have been brilliant down the stretch, and the aforementioned PACERS, but it would be very surprising to see either one of these teams winning it all. This year's playoffs have a wide-open look to them, and it could be a question of which team gets hot at the right time. We'll stick with the SUNS since they were our pre-season tip all along.
