| NFL PICKS: LOOKING AHEAD TO THE 2005/06 SEASON
NFL futures lines have been posted at all major offshore sports books, and there is a lot of betting value for the shrewd NFL handicapper. Obviously there will be some unforseen surprises this NFL season as that is always the case: sleeper teams will be a lot better than most pundits predicted, and there will be a similar number of overvalued teams. The key is to try and isolate those teams right now!
Here are some of our free NFL Picks and Predictions for the season:
Teams we like include the Chargers who are good value to win their division at +240. Vegas makes the AFC West an even race between all four teams. This is ludicrous. The Raiders cannot win a division with Collins as their QB, regardless of whether Moss is deep or not. The Broncos are similarly handicapped by Jake Plummer, and until the Chiefs can show that they have a legitimate defense the Chargers remain the class of this division.
A sexy pick by everyone this season seems to be the Ravens and the result is that they are OVERVALUED to win their division. They shoudl improve and be a playoff contender, but Boller has done nothing to suggest that he can carry this team and their division is very tough, with the Steelers and even the Bengals better value to win. Watch out for the Bengals this season. They should make the playoffs and be solid betting value throughout the campaign.
The other interesting team in the AFC is Jacksonville, who should mature into a genuine force. They could challenge the Colts for the division title. The Colts are a class outfit, but we doubt they can go deep into the playoffs for the usual reasons. Instead look to the AFC East to bring the firepower and provide the eventual AFC conference champion. We're not sure it will be the Patriots, although their depth is impressive, but both the Jets and even the Bills look like they could get to the playoffs, and go deep from there.
The Bills have a great defense, one of the best in the entire league, and they could be very good spread betting value provided their key offensive weapons remain healthy. Look for them to become this year's version of the Steelers.
The NFC once again looks exceptionally weak overall. Barring the Eagles and the Falcons there isn't a single team from this conference that could make the playoffs if they had to compete in the AFC. The Eagles are a cinch to win their division even at -400, and the Falcons should do the same in their division at a juicier line. A team like Arizona should improve enough to make the playoffs this year and should be watched closely. Tampa Bay is another team that could improve sufficiently to make the playoffs as well.
