This is another full Kentucky Derby field (second time in as many years that 20 will go to post) and the full field of 20 adds to the uncertainty, as a number of horses with great chances will have bad trips and be unlucky in running. How can we predict that? It's only logical. With 20 inexperienced three-year olds, the track configuration at Churchill Downs, and the fact that very few races in the USA feature fields of this size, the odds are that it will be a rough race. With that in mind, let's have a look at the main contenders:
BELLAMY ROAD
One of 5 Nick Zito runners and the clear betting favorite. Ran like a superstar last time out in the Wood, winning by 17 lengths. Has trained very well leading up to this race. Probably the best horse in the field but the pace of the race might undo him, and there is no betting value here.
AFLEET ALEX
Very strong contender. Won the Arkansas Derby in a romp, the same prep race won by Derby winner Smarty Jones in 04. Excuses for his only weak race in the Rebel but might still be outclassed here in what is a very strong field.
BANDINI
The race could play out in his favor. Has a pacemaker in the field (Spanish Chestnut) to ensure he gets the pace he needs. Has great closing speed, which is key in this race. Also has the formline coming off a tremendous win in the Blue Grass. Breeding, good trainer, and great jockey are all there as well, and he offers the best betting value at 6/1.
HIGH FLY
Another Zito horse with excellent form. Is slightly overlooked in the betting at 8/1 and also offers good value at that price. Might not stay the distance is the main concern, but will get a great ride from Jerry Bailey and won the Florida Derby last time out.
DON'T GET MAD
This is our best longshot pick. The horse currently is 30/1 and has to have a shot at the board. He is undefeated at Churchill Downs, with 3 wins at the track that he clearly relishes. Also won the Derby Trial in a canter and has a lot of upside. May not stay the trip but could also mount a challenge that is surprising. Include in exotic plays.
The Rest:
Zito's other horses are no slouches, particularly NOBLE CAUSEWAY who is attracting some wise-guy money that shouldn't be ignored. Bobby Frankel's runner, HIGH LIMIT is probably the best of the rest, but is held by BANDINI on a straight line of form.

Bet BANDINI to win at 6/1.
