| F.A. Cup Semi-Final Picks
There is a gulf in class between the participants in the first semi-final, Manchester United and Arsenal, and those in the second, Nationwide teams Sunderland and Millwall. But both games share one thing in common - tight betting markets, with the bookies unsure which of the three results to favor in either semi-final. Fortunately we do not suffer from the same hesitation as these betting previews will make clear.
Arsenal (8/5) vs Manchester United (15/8), the Draw (23/10)
The right bet here is Arsenal at 8/5. We would go so far as to say that based on the Gunners form this season it is even a slight overlay. Do not concern yourself with last week's Premiership draw at Highbury. This game means a lot more to Arsene Wenger and his squad. They want the treble, and while he may talk of resting his star players they will be available if necessary, and the word is that they may still end up starting. It is all mind games between the managers at this point, although it does look as though Ruud Van Nistelrooy may not be ready to go. His knee injury could be the crucial difference between these two on Saturday.
Arsenal are overstocked with talent, and they have all the momentum in the midst of one of the best ever seasons of football by an English club. We certainly don't fancy United's stingy price with the doubts surrounding their starting lineup. Expect more Arsenal magic.
Sunderland (8/5) vs Millwall (2/1), the Draw (9/4)
Two Division 1 teams battle for the right to be this year's runner-up in the F.A. Cup. But of course there is more at stake than that, namely a place in Europe next season. One feels sorry for any civilized European team that has to venture into Millwall for a cup-tie in 2005. There are probably a number of F.A. officials secretly hoping that Sunderland prevails.
Their prayers should be answered on Sunday, as we predict that Sunderland will advance, and at the decent price of 8/5 as well. Past mettings this season need to be put aside, although it is true that Millwall won both games. Recent form suggests that Sunderland have made tremendous improvement. Sunderland are unbeaten in their last nine games, and they have won their last three in a row. Millwall are also playing well, but they are a youhtful and exuberant team who could find the occasion overwhelming. Sunderland are coached by wise old heads, while Millwall are simply coached by someone named Wise, but who never played according to the billing, if you get our drift.
Cool heads will prevail on Sunday and Sunderland should advance to the final.
