| College Football Betting Basics
College football betting is unique in that it offers some of the best lines or odds in all of sports betting, but it also attracts the loosest gamblers. There are a number of lines to cover every weekend, so it is only natural that the Vegas college football handicappers might post several overlays every week. This is especially true in the smaller conferences that are not nationally televised. There is less action on these NCAAF games, and less attention is paid to them by the causal fan who wants to gamble on college sports.
The overlays are not a problem for the Vegas sportsbooks, however, because so much dead money is placed on college football teams by inexperienced gamblers. These are the guys who went to State and feel that they should bet on State in-between their seventh free drink of the afternoon. They don't care about overlays and spreads and probabilities, heck they don't even know what those terms mean. They went to State, woo-hoo!
You need to pay attention to trends and history in college football betting, more so than in other sports. If the Jaguars have beaten the Panthers eight out of nine times that it is a trend with only limited value. The reasons are that the NFL landscape changes each year. New pros, new coaches, and no burden of expectation - no one really cares if this streak lasts or ends other than a few die-hard fans. Ask any player on either team and he'll have no idea the streak even exists. BUT, in the NCAA, these streaks are critical. Go to Washington State and ask them what their record is against UW over the past 20 years. The guy who plays the kazoo in the band will know the answer. The entire school knows that Washington State is owned by UW, and all the players know too. So when it comes time to place a large college football bet and it is Apple Cup you should know that regardless of current form this trend must be taken into serious consideration.
In college football betting the back-door cover is your best friend. What is this back-door cover of which we speak? It is when a team covers the spread right at the death, usually by scoring garbage points that don't impact on the final result. Nothing is more painful to watch if it means your college football bet just went down the toilet on a 100 yd punt return TD to make the final score 43-10 (with the line at -34), and nothing is sweeter if you have the lousy underdog team. The point is that college football spreads can be enormous, and -34 is fairly typical. Tread carefully with these 5 TD lines. It doesn't take much for an underdog to cover, and still lose by 30.
When betting college football lines be selective. This holds true for all sports betting, but it is even more important when you are faced with a card of 50 games. You have opinions, and scrolling down you might see 10 great college football betting opportunities. Remember that the more games you play the more likely you are to end at 50% or lower, and lose overall. It is easier to get 2 out of 3 right and hit 66% than it is to get 7 out of 10. Try it for yourself and you'll see we're right. Do your homework and narrow down your college football bets so that you have two or three premium NCAA football betting plays each week.
If you're patient, up to date with recent form, aware of any trends that might factor into the result, and avoid those huge spreads unless extremely confident that the favorites will rout the minnows, you will succeed when you place your college football bets.
