Baseball Betting - The Basics

Bet Baseball Games Like The Pros

Betting on baseball is one of the most lucrative ways to make money in sports handicapping. There are several reasons why:

First, and most important of all, there are far bigger spreads or differences in odds available for any given MLB game. You need to have a few sports book accounts for MLB betting, because the various sports books offer very different prices on the same games. Football and Basketball betting is dominated by the against the spread (ATS) bet, where teams are handicapped (they receive or give points) and then offered at the same price (-110 or 9/10 roughly). But baseball uses a money-line, where one bets on teams straight-up without a handicap.

Second, there are a lot more baseball games in a season than any other sport. These 162 games reward in-depth research far more than the NFL, where unpredictable surprises are the norm. In the MLB teams build up momentum and go on long winning streaks, or they lose form and play poorly for weeks at a time. This is true at an individual level, so that following hot pitchers in particular is a great way to make a lot of money. The more work you put in to handicapping baseball, the more money you will make.

Third, there is far less parity in baseball compared to the NHL or NFL. Finding a team that has improved from previous years (say the Texas Rangers in 2004, or the Florida Marlins in 2003) can make you a lot of money because teams are often priced up according to their past history as opposed to their current form.

Fourth, too much attention is given to starting pitchers in baseball - a fact that is already built into most lines. But if you have done your research and know the rest of the team's bullpen you can find tremendous betting value. Good starts are regularly undone and ruined by inept relief pitching. Who has the better bullpen? That is a question to ask when you are ready to make serious swag.
